Just a few days ago we’ve seen a first hands-on of the PlayStation Phone, Sony Ericsson’s first PS-based Android smartphone, and a device we’ve been waiting for ages to be conceived and announced.
The PlayStation Phone, that might bear the name Xperia Play when launched, is arriving just a little too late to the mobile gaming business. The iPhone, iPod touch and iPad are tough adversaries, not to mention that any flagship Android device will be able to play lots of hot games too. So will the PlayStation Phone be a successful device or are we looking at a future Sony Ericsson flop?
The Play phone that was, again, leaked somewhere in Taiwan, will offer us a 4-inch touchscreen display with 854 x 480 resolution, 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, dual-speakers, dedicated slide-out gaming controls, 1,500mAh battery, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the hood.
On paper the PlayStation Phone is pretty interesting but we’ll remind you that a plethora of powerful flagship Android phones have been announced at CES 2011 already, coming to Verizon and AT&T this year, and MWC 2011 might bring us even more similar devices. We’re looking at 4G LTE / WiMAX / HSPA+ capabilities and dual-core processors which seem to be two very important features of the next-gen Android smartphones.
Will the PlayStation Xperia Play be able to match these devices when it comes to overall phone performance? Because, at the end of the day, if you’re looking for a smartphone that’s capable of playing games that means you’re mostly interested in the smartphone experience. Otherwise you could very well be buying just a mobile gaming device such as a PSP, a Nintendo 3DS or an iPod touch, which should satisfy your mobile gaming needs.
