Lenovo Ideacentre B500 review

Lenovo’s Ideacentre B500 (0887-4AG) will split the all-in-one fanboys right down the middle. The robust angular brushed metal and orange grille feel a touch gauche compare to the cool sleek minimalism of the others.

It doesn’t look or feel like a flat panel with PC inside – it looks like a gamer’s PC that has shed a few pounds to squash in to a relatively small frame. That frame is robust though and it has a solid kickstand at the back.

We love the brilliant Bluetooth mouse and keyboard that maintain the same vibe as the PC with an orange imprint over a gun-metal grey finish. These are optical and wireless with the IR receiver already built into the back These proved to be responsive enough for any task we threw at it, including ninja reflex gaming.

Round the back Lenovo has put the four USB ports, an Ethernet port, TV tuner and an old school out of place PS/2 port. The left hand side houses another two USB ports, multi-format card reader and a couple of audio jacks.

Primed for multimedia tasks, including brilliant JBL speakers, we were surprised to see Lenovo has left out a HDMI port. You also won’t be getting your grubby mitts on a Blu-ray player as this bad boy only supports a multi-format slot loading DVD drive.

Lenovo Ideacentre B500: Screen

If you can live without a HD player, you will be most pleased with the 23-inch screen. The centre piece of is its excellent 1080p HD screen. For a change, it is matte rather than gloss so it isn’t quite as vibrant for multi-media as the rest of the models. But it makes this unit better served for multi-purpose tasks. That said, the viewing angle is generous and it well lit so we had no issue to report gaming in HD or streaming You Tube HD content.

While the Ideacentre B500 lacks a touchscreen, Lenovo has still deigned to give it a comprehensive bundle of its own Vantage Tecnololgy multimedia management stuff. This in part is due to a motion sensor remote control that can be wielded like Wii controller. The games are limited and it’s not as accurate but we look forward to seeing where Leonovo take the idea in future iterations. It also makes passing your time while you’re downloading anything much more fun.

Lenovo Ideacentre B500: Performance

Lenovo is very generous with the specs at this bargain price. The Ideacentre B500 0887-4AG includes superb next gen gaming ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics with 1GB. You also get 4GB, a big 1TB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

That is enough firepower to cope with Call of Duty: Black Ops without any lag. In fact, we pushed this AiO PC all the way up to HD quality with settings maxxed to full and still got 35FPS.

It might be a sin not to offer a touchscreen on all-in-one PCs these days but Lenovo packs everything else and the kitchen sink in for a bargain. Anyone buying it won’t be let down with it’s all-round multimedia savvy and performance.

Leovoa Ideacentre B500 price: £700-£800 online

Price in India: Rs. 35k

Nikon Coolpix L22 Review

Point and shoot digital cameras are pretty handy if you cell phone/smart phone isn t one that boasts of an exceptional camera. So is the Nikon Coolpix L22 one to be carried around or will it be forgotten in a crowd? Lets find out!

Package and Contents

The packaging of the Nikon Coolpix L22 is the same as that of its younger brother the L21. The cardboard box houses 2 x AA alkaline batteries, a USB cable, Installation CD, manual, strap and the camera itself.

First Impression

The camera has a plastic body with a brushed aluminum finish with a standard black mat finish at the back and a coloured front (our review unit was a silver one). The camera is no eye catcher unless you pick up one the more fancy colours namely the red, blue or the black one. The device does feel solid in ones hands and the most striking feature is the 3-inch LCD display at the back.

Performance

For a box price of just Rs 7450, the device does pack quite a punch with an array of customizable features which begins with a maximum picture resolution of 12 MP, White balance options, continuous shoot, colour tone options (vivid, black and white, etc) and the same backlit options as its predecessor (the L21) such as portrait, landscape, night portrait, indoor, beach snow, sunset, dawn, the list is quite long.

In terms of actually clicking the images, the image quality is crisp at 12MP resolution, and can be viewed with great comfort on your big TV.

The lack of an SD card straight out of the box is felt as the device can click and store only 2 images taken at maximum resolution on the internal memory. The camera also runs on 2 x AA alkaline batteries. Out of an average pair of batteries expect to click around 240 images.

The 3-inch LCD is something that the device can boast about, as images look crisp and clear on it. The quick access buttons along side the menu button are well laid out on the right of the LCD.

Verdict

All in all this is a good entry level point and shoot for all those hoping to get good picture quality along with control over a few functionalities such as white balance, continuous shoot to name a few.

Box Price- Rs 7450 ($165.55)

Specs:
12MP camera
3.0-inch LCD display
3.6x Zoom
2x AA Batteries
19MB internal memory
Video capture resolution of 640x480

Gigabyte Aivia K8100 gaming keyboard review

Nothing wireless, everything wired to wipe out latency, customizable and programmable macro's, good weight responsive keys and looks that somehow resemble Ferrari's and Lamborghini cars. See the products as tested are offered in a variety of colors, Ferrari Black and Red, and Lamborghini Yellow. Now of course Gigabyte does not admit that they 'lend' that idea from the car makers licensing wise, but ... well you'll see the resemblance.

So the design concept was simple, make a cool looking keyboard targeted at gamers that actually qualifies for gamers in functionality and looks. It should appeal to you and be very functional. Gigabyte certainly succeeded as the K8100 as tested today will at the very least interest you. Functionality and looks is what it's all about with this 69 USD costing, Aivia K8100 keyboard.

Price: $69
