HP Recalls PCs with Intel 6 Series/C200 “Cougar Point” Chipset

HP has reinstall its laptop and desktop PCs with the Intel 6 Series/C200 “Cougar Point” chipset, used in systems with 2nd Generation Intel Core “Sandy Bridge” processors.
The company says it stopped manufacturing products with the affected Intel chipset on January 31, and initiated a shipment hold on products in HP and channel inventory.
Owners of HP “Sandy Bridge” laptops should check in Windows Device Manager if their PC contains the faulty 6 Series C200 chipset.
“If you have purchased an HP computer with the affected chipset, you have three options:
- According to information from Intel, you can continue to use your HP computer. We will inform customers when a service solution becomes available.
- You can return your HP computer to the point of purchase for a refund.
- You can return your HP computer to the point of purchase and choose a comparable system,” HP says.
HP has previously had on sale select Pavilion laptop models with the faulty chipset. Other HP notebook series include only models with previous generation of Intel Core CPUs and chipsets.

HP Palm Tablet Teaser

Here is a teaser the upcoming HP Palm tablet.Now that the kitty's out of the gemstone bag, we're slowly starting to connect the dots that obscure the details of Palm's soon to be announced "Topaz" and "Opal" tablets. First up is information from one of our original trusted sources who claims that the Opal will measure 180 x 144 x 13mm (making it a bit shorter and wider than the 190.1 x 120.5 x 12-mm Galaxy Tab) and feature a 1,024 x 768 pixel TFT LCD display. We're told that the bigger Topaz tablet will ship about three months before Opal and measures in at 241 x 190 x 13mm (making it nearly identical to the 242.8 x 189.7 x 13.4-mm iPad) with a pixel resolution that could be the same as the Opal (our source wasn't 100 percent on this). We're also hearing that the "premium audio" we saw on that leaked marketing slide will indeed be powered by HP's Beats audio processing, and that the tablets will be provided with "tens of gigabytes" of cloud storage -- so much that it dwarfs the local storage on the devices. Our HP Palm prompted a tipster (who wishes to remain anonymous) to send us a consumer survey conducted very recently by GfK Custom Research North America, a company HP has used before (Google it) to gain insight into consumer interests. While the survey doesn't mention Palm or HP by name, it's rife with trademarked terms like "Synergy" used in the descriptions of the "different things this new tablet computer can do." In other words, the features described already exist in the tablet(s) and the survey is attempting to gauge interest, presumably in an attempt to fine tune the promotional materials and marketing approach. One such feature mentioned is "Touchstone," where the survey asks the respondent how interested they are in a programmable wireless charging dock that transforms the tablet into an alarm clock, digital photo frame, and GPS unit -- sounds like webOS 2.0Exibition to us. This is corroborated by a trusted source who confirmed to us that inductive charging will, in fact, be a feature of the HP / Palm tablets.

HP Compaq Releases Four WLED Backlit LCD Monitors

HP Compaq is back with four new WLED Backlit LCD monitors, the LE1901wl, LA2006x, LA2206x and LA2306x. The HP Compaq LE1901wl is a 19-inch entry-level display with a mercury-free WLED backlit panel, a 16:10 aspect ratio, a VGA input, and a VESA compatibility. The 20-inch LA2006x, 21.5-inch LA2206x and 23-inch LA2306x monitors feature an ergonomically improved slider stand that provides tilt and swivel adjustments as well as a 90-degree pivot. These LCD monitors also feature a full HD resolution, a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a digital DVI port, DisplayPort and a built-in two USB ports. The HP Compaq LA2006x, LA2206x and LA2306x are priced at $209 each, while the HP Compaq LE1901wl retails for $157.

HP Pavilion G62 Notebook Review

This is the new Pavilion notebook series apart from the DV range which HP has. I like the DV range, so much so that I actually own one! But how good is the G-series? Let's find out.

Packaging and Contents

The G62 comes with what the laptop usually comes with- the laptop itself, a power brick, a power cord, some manuals and a bag to carry it around in.

First Impression

The G62 which I got for review was dressed in Charcoal color, with HP's now traditional Imprint finish. Thankfully, the G62 is completely matte in finish (except the border around the screen) which makes it less of a fingerprint and scratch magnet- unlike the DV range.


Performance

Powered by the Core i3 processor clocking at a very fast 2.4GHz coupled with 3GB RAM, the G62 should be fast if we look at these specs on a sheet. This machine comes with Windows Home Basic 64-bit edition, and a high end ATI graphics card.

In terms of benchmark testing, the G62 is an absolute rocket. The PC Mark score of 6622 is a clear testament to the fact that this machine is a multi-tasker's delight. There will no slowdowns even with multiple apps open.

The 3D Mark score, which evaluates the 3D rendering and gaming capabilities of the machine, clocks to a score of 4093. The ATI graphics card with 1GB dedicated video memory is a real delight for anyone who wants to have a gaming session on the G62.

The battery life of a machine so powerful, inevitably, will not be like those offered by a less powerful one. The battery completely drained out in just less than 2 hours in the battery tests. However, this test was with full screen brightness and all connectivity options switched on. If you turn down the screen brightness a bit, and switch off stuff like Wi-Fi, then the battery life improves.

The build quality if the G62 is quite solid. The keypad has a nice soft feel to it. The only niggle which I had was with the touchpad. It was as bad as the one in the HP dm3 notebook- rough to use, temperamental response and annoying to use. This can be solved if you use an external mouse, whenever you can, with the machine, though. There is no E-Sata port. However, the HDMI out will allow you to connect this machine to an HD projector or a TV as well.

Verdict

At a price of just under Rs 40k, the G62 does make a lot of sense to actually buy this one. It has the raw processing power as well as a lot of grunt for games. If you have a budget of just under Rs 40k, this is definitely my pick, even over the Dell Inspiron.
