Samsung DualView TL225

If there’s one thing to regret about being the photographer in a group, it’s that you never seem to be in any of the great pictures you take. At best you can set up a shot then try to hop into it at the last moment using the countdown timer, hoping to position yourself in the right place. Until now, that is. In addition to the rear viewing screen that is typical of compact digital cameras, the Samsung DualView TL225 features a 1.5-inch LCD screen on the front side of the product so you can see exactly the photo as it will be taken, allowing for perfect positioning before the photo is automatically snapped. It’s even a touch screen so simply tapping it is all that is required to set up the self portrait process. It also displays a comical animation in the child mode that is designed to grab the attention of kids that aren’t too interested in being photographed.

The rear main screen is also a winner. At 3.5-inches, diagonal measure, it’s among the largest screens available and with 1.152 megapixel resolution the screen displays sharper, more detailed images than most of the competition. It’s a full touchscreen incorporating almost all controls and menus into a single easy to understand and use package. Only the on/off switch and the shutter release are located on the top edge of the model.

While the screens get all the attention, the DualView TL225’s picture taking ability is also outstanding. It features 12.2-megapixel resolution as well as both optical and digital image stabilization to assure clear photos. It also has a 4.6x optical zoom lens plus 5x digital zoom. It has a high quality, 27MM Schneider-KREUZNACH lens which will allow for wider angle shots than are available with the typical lens on a 35mm model. To capture fast action shots, the device can shoot up to six frames per second by holding down the shutter release.

Image Quality:

Taking pictures in a variety of modes is accommodated by the smart auto feature which provides automatic settings for fourteen different conditions. The settings can be overridden by manual controls to satisfy the needs of more accomplished photographers. The TL225 can be used to capture HD in 1280x720p resolution at 30 frames per second. It uses the H.264 file format which allows for about double the recording as the more commonly used MP4 format. It also provides for higher quality sound recording. The compact digital camera has a mini-HDMI connector which allows for viewing HD video on an HDTV or HD monitor. An adaptor, not included, is required to use this feature but it also has a USB connector

Battery Life/Memory:

Built-in memory is a pretty impressive 55MB and the device will also accommodate up to a 4GM Micro SD memory card or an 8GB Micro SDHC card for expanded memory. However, we were disappointed to see that this compact digital camera can only capture 180 images on a single charge.

Summary:

The Samsung DualView TL225 is a remarkably handy compact digital camera with special emphasis on the photographer who’d like to get in on the great pictures, too. Though the innovative front screen and excellent LCD rear touchscreen are bound to garner most of the attention, this is overall a high quality product that will meet the needs of anyone looking for a compact image capturing device.
